Talent is Hard Work
2007September 26

I read a great articel this morning about The nature of Talent.
Every day we deal with creativity and I agree with this article. Creativity is not a mystery it’s about being to the point, for every piece of work you do and for all the different ways on how to proceed to hit the target. It is not like “light breeze – idea flashes up – finished” it’s hard work ‘till you can see the finish line.
The really stimulation and fun part in the whole design process is to see how your ideas grow. And after a long way of working, rejecting and refining your work you can see the result. And at this point you should start smiling – enjoy the moment – take a deep breath – and head over to the next challenge ;)
What do you think?

I agree, and it’s something that should be explained to more people and explained over and over again. At the school I teach, people come in because they’re promised to be taught creativiy. When their education comes to an end, they simply aren’t as lucky as the one “taleted” guy/girl that everyone talks about.
Of course noone even thinks that it might have something to do with that one student spending on average 4-6 hours a day more behind the computer. Nope, can’t be that, they just got lucky when God was handing out Talent.
It’s sometimes quite sad, since I get the feeling that 80-90% of the people are lazy or uninterested in their work. Which would also explain why 60% of Austrians aren’t interested in Weiterbildung…

Interesting!
Anyone can work hard. Working hard, working long, even “working smart” does not make someone talented.
I like the article you linked to: The author admits he could spend 10 years studying the idea of ‘Talent’ – to me that is a clue. We cannot put our finger on “Talent” – maybe it is inspiration, drive, dedication, desire to be the best, training at an early age, genetics – whatever the other factors are, they are human, and cannot easily be boiled down to hours in front of a computer, an instrument, etc.
I agree, talent cannot exist without hard work. It just does not make the relationship one-to-one ;)

“hard work” sounds a bit negative but it isn’t. It’s also about fun and passion. If you’re passionate about what you do you will refine your talent.

I agree. Hard work does not have to be negative.
Talent is impossible without hard, fun, passionate work.
Hard, fun, passionate work might make you good at something, but Talented?
I believe the “Talented” is the .001% that sticks out above the hard workers. These are not always the hardest working. They have something else…harder to describe… a larger ability and capacity to do the work, molded by 1000s of factors we cannot measure.
Or can we?

I definatly agree! Hard work is the key right from the very start of a designer’s education and early carrer. Creativity, so as style, is something you’ll build up from the ground during a long way of trying combinations of shapes.
But let’s not forget on how important it is for one to be able to decide what trully is valuable while growing up professionaly. Not everyone seems to be able to be shaped into a creative professional!
