This is how here in austria mail is delivered after it went through the hands of the austrian customs authority.
No, no body parts or snakes inside—just books from amazon. The worst thing is that they now look like second hand and I love new books.
It’s like the last time when we received christmas gifts from the US everything was torn opened. The problem is not necessarily that they open stuff but how they treat property owned by others. It just sucks!

It’s not ok and we do have an association for consumers rights but to sue nationalized authorities would be like tilting at windmills ;)

Wow, they do actually open packages from Amazon over there? How do they find the time for that?
Here in Amsterdam we never had a package that was opened by customs and we order books and hardware from outside the Netherlands quite often.

EITHER new books with not even one dog-ear OR 1950-1970ies books which are totally tatty OR 500 year old but perfect restored folio collections.
but it´s not the job of customs officials to treat books nice, is it?

Did they at least bring the books to your place or did they just leave the yellow paper in your mailbox?
I ordered from the US exactly once and since then only get stuff delivered from the EU.

@samo: the yellow paper thing of course. They don’t deliver things over 1kg (2.2 pound) – but it’s funny to walk across the 6th district with a Santa Claus sack on the back ;)

If you know other people who got the same problem, why don’t you join and sue the customs authority?
Don’t you have something like DECO (in Portugal), an association that protects the consumers rights?
Or is that just fine around there?
