austria. webdesign island of the blessed
2007April 03
An article (PDF, 1.8mb) in this weekends issue of der standard defines the local value of webdesign in austria. It’s in german (no, I won’t translate it, it’s not worth the trouble anyway).
So, everybody who wasted years of his/her life on design related studies instead of making a 6 days course to become a web professional – Cheer up!

I wonder if they think you can learn other jobs in six days, too. It just makes no sense at all.

I think the problem is that everyone knows what “web design is” but noone what it actually takes to be good at it. Because everyone has a nephew who’s “doing web design on the side” and whatnot and it seems simple enough. And it’s much easier to pay for Web Design courses for unemployed people and pretend to be doing something positive that way without having to think much about the problem.
The only thing one can do is to simply not compete in that market and price yourself out of it. Or to learn “phenomenal new stuff” like RoR and that scripacuthingy and cater to a niche market.
Ah well, sometimes it’s nice to have a market that’s often stuck in 2001 and sometimes it’s not…

so much about faking unemployment statistics … pathetic

I can agree with this problem. I was trainer some years ago for php, mysql and javascript trying to teach it to unemployed people in vienna. More than 90% afterwards had no idea, as the time was much too short to explain “newbies” how to develope an webapplication.
Even worse, many of them told me in front of the course, that they are already programmers. I checked it and let them program a simple function. Suprise what happened: No chance to solve the problem…
So its not even the webdesign its also the programmers, which are more prolamers.

Jesus Christ and I was hoping the wave of “Let’s give every unemployed bum a web design course” is slowly over in Austria. Apparently not.
If someone in Austria tells you he is a “Web Designer” that’s just he same as being a hairdresser or car mechanic – namely jobless.
